Coffee In Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is considered by many to be an undeveloped frontier that is dominated by tribes and a fractious political system. Instability and societal challenges are rife, yet it maintains a relatively small coffee industry that has earned a reputation for cultivating quality speciality coffee.

The origins of Papua New Guinea’s coffee production can be traced back to the 1800s, but commercial coffee production did not get underway until the 1920s. Since the start of commercial production, its coffee industry has moved in ebbs and flows, with the 1960s and 1980s being periods of growth while the 1970s and 1990s involved marked declines in production.

Today, coffee production in Papua New Guinea involves overcoming the significant challenges posed by PNG’s poor infrastructure and frequent hijackings. Some coffee producers lose up to 50% of their beans to theft. Despite this, the country’s resilience and agility has helped it to embrace sustainable practices including soil quality initiatives and farmer education.

PNG have also improved their coffee quality assurance and testing processes for wet processing. This is reflected in the quality of their coffee and the distinctive flavour profiles that it produces.

Coffee has become Papa New Guinea’s most valuable agricultural export, with around one million bags per annum being exported around the world to coffee roasters. Coffee production directly or indirectly supports around two million people in PNG, which gives it an important role in supporting the livelihoods of many.

Cultivating Papua New Guinea Coffee

After careful cultivation at an altitude of 1400-1900m above sea level, Our Papua New Guinea coffee beans are harvested between April and September ready for processing. Papua New Guinea Kongo B is wet processed and dried using either mechanical driers, raised beds or sails. The sails act as tarpaulins stretched out under the sun, which provide a great space for drying the beans.

Following the harvesting, the Papua New Guinea coffee arrives at our Hampshire roastery ready for our roastmaster, Romeo, to small batch roast it.
During roasting, Romeo concentrates on drawing out its natural flavour notes, which enhances the flavour profile of the beans and stays true to its origin. The Papua New Guinea Kongo B is a great addition to our single origin coffee collection and is sure to delight many coffee lovers UK-wide.
